Abbey Road Photo FAQ: Clues?

The 'Paul is Dead' rumour began in early 1967. The Abbey Road cover photo provided new 'clues.'

The white VW Beetle

A VW Beetle is parked behind the crossing Beatles. Who owned it is disputed but most likely a resident of Abbey Road.

The license plate LMW 281F created much excitement. Some claimed this was the age Paul would have been save for that alleged fatal car crash.

Others point out that the plate was a year out (he was twenty-seven at the time of the photo).

Shoeless Paul

Why was Paul not wearing shoes? Many seized on the notion that this symbolised his death.

McCartney's explanation: "It was a very hot day! I took off my shoes because they were uncomfortable." Oddly, he didn't remove his jacket - all four look overdressed for high temperatures.

Paul has been similarly dismissive about holding his cigarette in his (wrong!) right hand. Like all left-handers in a right-handed world, he has adapted all his life.

John's White Suit

Another symbol of mourning? Or just what he often wore in that period (see wedding photo with Yoko, for example).

Did Paul die in 1967? Spoiler alert: no.
